IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry), Chemistry and Chemistry Honors, Blinn Math

Welcome Students and Parents

In the following sections of my website, you will find my syllabi for the Chemistry/Chemistry Honors and Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) classes that I teach for Weimar High School.  Many topics are covered such as course description, attendance, tutoring, my teaching schedule, classroom rules, and the grading policy including make-up work and retesting, etc.  Below that you will find all of the contact/technology codes for Remind and Google Classroom. All Students and Parents should sign in for Remind in order for parent - teacher communication is quick and easy. All students must be signed in to Google Classroom so that they can use this wonderful educational tool when they are absent for any reason including extracurricular activities so they do not get behind in their work.  Students will need to use the email given to them by the school, not a personal one.  Blinn students will not find Blinn College syllabus or curriculum here.  They will need to go to the Blinn College website and navigate there for their Blinn College classes.

Syllabi (continued)

The following Grading policy is the policy stated on the chemistry syllabus.  The only changes made for IPC are in braces {   } where necessary.

GRADING POLICY:  Per District Policy     Daily Work: 45%                     Major Work: 55%

  • District policy requires a minimum of three Major Work grades and 6 Daily Work grades. For this class {and IPC} we will go above and beyond the minimum requirements in order to practice the material to be prepared for a test.
  • Major Work will consist of unit tests and six weeks projects. Students are to complete the test in the class period unless there is a classroom interruption or has an accommodation of extra time. Extra time is only given during activity period or after school of the same day. We will have a minimum of 2 tests and a project each six weeks or at most 4 tests and a project if/when the units are short (3-4 lessons each). How many units are covered each six weeks will depend on the school calendar and any other interruptions of class time. Projects are given within the first week of the six weeks, are usually given 4 to 5 weeks to complete outside of class, and are turned in the last week of the six week grading period. For my projects, students should always consider the idea “more information, less decoration.” Chemistry projects are Google Slide projects. {IPC projects are done on poster boards}
  • Daily work consists of Labs, Homework, Quizzes, and participation grade. In my class, Homework is assigned each day and students are required to turn in the homework the next day for a daily grade.
    • Students may have 15 to 20 homework assignments per six weeks {IPC:12-18} that will include an opportunity to use the new vocabulary, mathematical calculation process, or general understanding of a process in chemistry. Homework is assigned each day and students are required to turn in homework every day for a daily grade. Vocabulary sheets will be given out when the topic is started and checked as a completion/participation grade when the topic is tested. These vocabulary sheets should be filled out/added to as we go over the new vocabulary in the new lessons. {IPC: Vocabulary is part of daily homework} Homework is an independent practice opportunity before returning to class. If you have questions or need help please attend tutorials. Cheating and copying of homework is ill-advised and makes passing a test more difficult.
    • There can be 5 to 8 quizzes given in a six weeks {IPC: 3-5} as part of the 15 to 20 daily grades. These are short and are an opportunity for the student and teacher to determine if the student needs to attend tutorials prior to the test to master the material.
    • Laboratory opportunities become difficult since we share the lab space. These lab assignments will be graded as participation grades and count as part of the 15 to 20 daily grades. I will not tolerate student behavior that could lead to the injury of the doer or others. We will follow all lab safety rules and sign a safety contract. These rules do include proper dress.BE AWARE—THREE STRIKES AND YOU ARE OUT APPLIES:1st offense—student will sit out the rest of the experiment, be reminded of safety rules, and complete an alternative assignment. 2nd offense-student will be referred to the office, an alternative assignment given, and a parent conference will need to take place for the student to return to the lab.3rd offense-student will be referred to the office and will not be allowed to return to lab the remainder of the year. Alternative assignments will be given in lieu of lab experiments.
  • Make-up Work Policy for students that want to make-up or redo an assignment or quiz they did not do well on may do so by attending tutorials and redoing the assignment or quiz in my room or before or after school from 7:30 to 7:55 am or 3:30-4 pm or attend activity period with their teacher’s permission. The highest grade for a these assignments will be a 70. WISD has a no zero policy concerning grades; therefore, you will need to do your work daily. I will be contacting parents as well as following the student handbook and school policy for work that is not turned in. For making up a test I will follow the policy of the District: The District shall permit a student who meets the criteria detailed in the grading guidelines a reasonable opportunity to retake a test for which the student received a failing grade. However, before the test may be re-administered, the student shall: ? attend tutorials prior to the retake ? correct the failed test ? complete a reflection as to why he/she failed the test; the reflection must be signed by the student’s parent/guardian ? retake the failed test outside of the regular school day
  • Late/Missing Work will need to be completed it in tutorials or during activity period with the teacher’s permission as well. The highest grade given for late work or missing work will be a 70. WISD has a no zero policy concerning grades; therefore, you will need to do your work daily. I will be contacting parents as well as following the student handbook and school policy for work that is not turned in.
  • An Absent Student is responsible for checking on Google Classroom and doing the assignment. If you do not know which assignment to do contact me via Remind. If you do not have a printer, use notebook paper to record answers to the assignment, and then the paper will be stapled to a hard copy when you return to class. If you have printing capabilities, then a hardcopy would be preferred. [Alternative but not recommended: he or she may pick up the missing work, use google classroom to do the assignment or attend tutorials to receive instructions.]This work will be graded normally and will be given extra time as per district policy to complete. If you are absent when the class is in the lab, you will need to follow the same procedure for being absent from class as stated earlier. It is up to the student if they do not understand the notes and assignment, to ask for help or attend tutorials.
  • For Parent Portal purposes, I am required to have all grades in the grade book by 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday. I usually have student grades updated weekly. Progress Reports and Report cards will be distributed according to district schedule posted by the door. Students are expected to have their student portal username and password working within the first week of school.
  • Scholastic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to
    • Copying from another student's test or class work or Manipulating a test or assignment
    • Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test;
    • Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator;
    • Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or part, the contents of an un-administered test, paper, or another assignment;
    • The unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the contents of the exams;
    • Bribing another person to obtain an exam or information about an exam;
    • Plagiarism (including the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT)
    • "Collusion" which shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing  written work for fulfillment of course requirements;
    • Dishonesty of any kind with respect to examinations or written assignments (in or out of class).

Any student caught cheating, aiding another student in cheating, or appropriating the words or work of others without proper citation will be subject to academic discipline.  It is the responsibility of the student not only to abstain from cheating, but in addition, to avoid the appearance of cheating, and to guard against making it possible for others to cheat.  All parties involved in cheating will receive non-replaceable zeros for the assignment, project, quiz, or test.  They will also receive a referral to the principal for further disciplinary action.

ALL ABOUT ME

Just some quick info about me...I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and moved to Alabama when I was four.  My family lived there until I was 16 when we moved to Texas.  My father was a Presbyterian minister and junior college English instructor.  He passed away in 2004.  My mother has been a OB/GYN nurse most of her life and eventually moved to nurse administrator before she retired.  She currently lives in Weimar.

I graduated from a private, international school, Presbyterian Pan American High School, in Kingsville, Texas.  I went on to college at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas.  I received a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Chemistry.  I went back to obtain college hours for my teaching certificate.  I taught physical science and pre-algebra in Carrizo Springs, Texas; biology and chemistry in Bruni, Texas; algebra 1 in Kingsville, Texas.  While in Kingsville, I completed my Masters of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Statistics at Texas A&M University.  I moved back to Carrizo Springs and taught algebra 2 and geometry at the high school and remedial math classes and college algebra for Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas. During this time, my first child, Rebecca Eleza was born.  From there, I moved to Waelder, Texas where I was jack-of-all-trades:  algebra 1 & 2, geometry, and precalculus classes, student council advisor, NHS advisor, and Student advisor.  While in Waelder, my second child, Christopher Michael was born.  I taught algebra 2 at Bastrop High School for one year. During this time, I also worked for Blinn College in Schulenburg, Texas as a college math instructor. In 2009, I came to Weimar and have taught algebra 1 & 2, geometry, chemistry, IPC, Environmental Science, TAKS and STAAR Prep classes and continued to teach for Blinn College.  This will be my 29th year teaching.  Let's make it a good one!
