Hello Parents/Guardians,

I wanted to write a letter to introduce myself to you and your parents. My name is Chelsea Mascheck. I graduated from University of Houston-Victoria. I am beginning my 12th year of teaching, I have a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am certified in EC-6 as well as ESL, Dyslexia intervention, and special education. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. This year will be packed full of learning experiences and fun adventures that no one will want to miss out on! I believe that teacher-parent communication is extremely important and encourage you to contact me with any and all questions or concerns. I will be available by email (cmascheck@weimarisd.org) phone 979-725-9515 ext: 1206, or remind chat (Class Code: @wjh06). I have conference period first thing in the mornings from 7:55-8:35 if at anytime in the year you would like to meet or for me to give you a call.

In order to promote academic success and a good classroom-learning environment, this year all students will be expected to abide by a few main classroom expectations. I would like for you to be familiar with these classroom expectations as well as the school rules and policies. All students are responsible for an AR GOAL and Weekly HW.  Our main classroom character expectations are: be respectful, be responsible, and be safe.

I have very high expectations for the academic school year, and am devoted to helping your child succeed!  I believe that all students are unique and capable of learning. I believe students should be responsible for their actions at all times and held accountable for their actions. I will push students to their fullest potential. They are smart and can do anything they set their mind to.

I strongly encourage all parents/guardians to get involved this year!  There are a variety of opportunities to help and I hope that you will take advantage of them. I will be sending home several papers the first week of school for you to look at and fill out regarding student information and remind. Please read over the attached syllabus and classroom expectations. Please contact me at ANY time if you have any questions or concerns. Once again, I am thrilled to be working with your child this year and cannot wait to see all of the amazing achievements this year brings!

Thanks so much for your support in your child’s education!!

Course Description:

ELAR  sharpens reading comprehension skills, engages readers in literary analysis, and offers a variety of literature. Through a varied selection of stories, plays, and poems, many of which highlight exemplary virtues, students develop skills of close reading and literary analysis. Students come to appreciate the writer's craft as they consider the feelings, thoughts, and ideas of characters, and make connections between literature and life. Students also learn to read for information in nonfiction texts. The class focuses on the following areas: Literature; Composition; Grammar/spelling, Usage and Mechanics; and Vocabulary.

Reading/ Writing Six Weeks Project:

Each six weeks students will be assigned a project.  This will be a test grade.  Their reading project will reflect what they have learned throughout the six weeks. The writing project will be written in the genre for the unit we are studying for that six weeks. These will be assigned ATLEAST 3 weeks prior to the due date.

Homework:

Homework will be given and due once a month. Spelling/ Vocabulary homework is due on the DUE DATE LISTED AT THE TO OF THE ASSIGNMENT!! Additional ELAR homework for the six weeks, will be to complete any incomplete classwork and will be due the next class period, unless specified.   Not completing homework on time will result in detention This includes;if their homework is partially complete and some incomplete! .  If for some reason there is no homework for the day/week the students will be notified and you will too via our week at a glance. There will also be a vocabulary/spelling test for each unit. They will have a total of 6 Vocabulary units and 6 Spelling Units for the year. Please help your child study as these are important to thor grades and success.

Grading Policy/Corrections:

We will do a variety of activities and assignments throughout the year.  Grades will include a mixture of daily grades and test grades.  Students will have at least six daily grades and three major grades for reading and for writing.  A reasonable attempt at making corrections will be given to any student that does not pass an assignment. It is their responsibility to return corrections to the teacher (corrections done preferably in a different color. Do NOT erase original answers).  Late assignments are due before the end of the six weeks grading period for students to be able to get credit for the missing work.  Daily grades and major grades are weighted as follows: Daily Grades 45% of students’ six weeks average; Major Grades 55% of students’ six weeks average. This is the grading policy for both reading and writing classes this year.

Grading Consequences: academic dishonesty, including cheating or copying the work of another student, plagiarism (including the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT), and unauthorized communication between students during an examination will result in disciplinary action and a 0 for the assignment.

Accelerated Reader (AR):

Each six weeks the students will have set personal AR goals.  The minimum amount of this goal is based on their independent reading level and reading an average of 20-25 minutes each night.  The percent of their goal they have earned will be a test grade, and their comprehension percentage will be a daily grade. A new goal is generated at the beginning of each six weeks. Students are given one class period per week to read. Each child should be reading nightly to achieve their goals!  You MUST meet your goal or this will significantly impact your grade and could result in failing for the six weeks, as well as, you will receive a lunch detention for no homework !!!

Grading Consequences: If students cheat on AR  (take a test for another student, give students answers, ect..) that test will be deleted and students will be given a disciplinary action at the principal's discretion.

Dear Parents,

Our class will be participating in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program this year.  AR is a county-wide reading program which encourages and motivates students to read books at school and home and earn points by taking computerized comprehension tests at school.  Every book in our school library and classroom library has been given a level, point value, and quiz number.  This information is printed on the back inside cover of every AR book.  Each student has been tested to determine his or her reading level, and I have set point goals based on the test results.  Your child’s book level and point goal for each grading period will be sent home at the top of their reading logs.  Students may also take AR tests every morning in our Library/my classroom from  7:30-7:55 or at the end of the day after school from 3:18-3:45. AR tests may only be taken at school.

Not every book is in the AR system.  When choosing books from home or the public library, please check online at arbookfind.com to determine if the book is in the AR system.  Your child will not be able to take tests for books which are not in the system.  If you are unsure of this, you can contact me and I will get this looked up for you.

Each six weeks the students will set a personal AR goal.  The minimum amount of this goal is based on their independent reading level and reading an average of 20-25 minutes each night.  The percent of their goal they have earned will be a test grade, and their comprehension percentage will be a daily grade. A new goal is generated at the beginning of each six weeks. You MUST meet your goal or this will significantly impact your grade and could result in failing for the six weeks as well as you will receive a lunch detention for no homework !!!

Have fun reading!
