Welcome to Weimar

Being on both sides of Interstate 10 and Highway 90, the City of Weimar is a small Texas town with a population of 1,981 within the city limits and a “trade area” population of 5,000 people.  Although the mileage differs, the driving time to Austin, San Antonio, Victoria and Houston is roughly equal.

Located on land of the original Austin Colony, Weimar was founded in 1873 when the railroad was built from Alleytown to San Antonio and was first settled by people from Southern states.  Later, many German and Czech immigrants settled in this area.  The city was incorporated in July 1875, and became an early industrial center with a cotton oil mill built about 1876.  Residents gained fame for their baseball team, their sausage, as a center where farmers could buy the things they needed.  Some kept their native tongues and memorabilia, but left Europe behind and became Texans for good.

Agriculture is Weimar’s primary business as evidenced by M-G Inc. with three divisions: M-G Feed Mill, M-G Farm Service Center, and M-G Implement Co.  The largest employer is UTEX Industries, a firm manufacturing various gaskets and seals for the oil field industry and various polyurethane products for other industries.

Weimar has good schools with the district covering 167 square miles.  Four of the eleven churches have congregations over 100 years old.  Visitors in Weimar should visit the beautiful St. Michael’s Catholic Church, dedicated May 27, 1914: it is on the State Historical Register.  The church with its 144-foot spire dominates the skyline for miles around.  Its vaulted ceiling, beautiful stained glass windows and Gothic Revival style reflect the Central European roots of many of Weimar’s early settlers.
